PAST PROJECTS 

Consultant to Inter-Coastal Electronics.  Developed hardware based on the Renesas H8S/2377 advanced 16 bit processor (16 Mbyte address space) and embedded software in C for an attitude measurement unit. The attitude measurement is based on an algorithm which combines results from dual GPS receivers, a MEMS Gyro and two dual-axis MEMS accelerometers. The software incorporated hard real-time data acquisition from 16 and 10 bit A/D converters, serial polling of off-the-shelf dual GPS receivers, solution computation and serial output of results to another module in the system. Also participated in the conceptual design of the custom enclosure to house this unit.

Consultant, for the past 7 years, to Fas-Co Coders and Imaje.  Development and design of all hardware for a range of industrial inkjet printers.  Boards designed included various ancillary boards for ink tanks, keyboard and touch panel support and a PC/104 bus-based printhead driver board. The PC/104 bus-based printhead driver board utilizes an FPGA and CPLD to provide all timing and control for the printheads as well as hardware image transformation algorithms and an innovative programmable switching power supply to power the printheads. The FPGA and CPLD code utilizes a combination of schematic, state machine and VHDL description. Consulted for the past 3 years in the area of mechanical CAD and product and production documentation. Drafted cable assemblies and wiring and tubing schematics in 2D. Designed and modeled all assemblies, including computer enclosures, ink tank assemblies, printhead enclosures and test fixtures in 3D. Prepared 3D assembly drawings and documented detailed in-house assembly instructions. Developed, implemented and documented system test procedures.  Specified and acquired parts for new system designs.

Consultant for more than 7 years to Shortridge Instruments, a manufacturer of Airdata Multimeters.  Ported existing processor board hardware design, maintaining hardware backward compatibility, to incorporate a Renesas H8S/2134 advanced 16 bit processor. Coded all software, in C, for their Airdata Multimeter which measures air flow, air pressure and temperature. The software applies transducer linearization and utilizes proprietary mathematical algorithms to provide accuracy over a significant range of air velocities.

Totally engineered the hardware, software, prototyping, printed circuit board design and enclosure design for a range of battery backup inverters for the security gate market.

Consulted at EF Data and designed two high speed video interfaces, incorporating Xilinx FPGA’s, for a high-speed satellite modem. The video data formats supported by the two interfaces are SDTI (proposed SMPTE 305M standard) and SMPTE310M.

Completed all system engineering, hardware and embedded software design for a patient health evaluation system.  The unit connects to a PC via USB and the design is based on the Renesas M16C processor M30245. The embedded software is written in C and was developed using the Renesas HEW software tool.

Completed a number of designs based on the Renesas H8S/2144.
